Background of the study

Digital linguistic creativity encompasses the innovative and experimental use of language within online communities. In Nigeria, platforms like Instagram and Twitter serve as catalysts for such creativity. Instagram’s visually driven environment encourages users to blend images with textual elements, leading to inventive wordplay and the emergence of new idioms and hashtags. Twitter, with its character constraints and rapid interaction cycles, fosters concise and witty linguistic expressions that often evolve into memes or trending hashtags (Adeola, 2023). These distinct yet complementary platforms provide a fertile ground for observing how language adapts and transforms in response to digital affordances. Nigerian users employ creative linguistic strategies to navigate cultural contexts and social identities, pushing the boundaries of traditional language norms (Ibrahim, 2024). This study compares the linguistic creativity evident on Instagram and Twitter, exploring how platform-specific features and audience expectations drive the evolution of digital language (Obi, 2025). The investigation seeks to contribute to theoretical models of digital linguistic innovation.

Statement of the problem

Although digital linguistic creativity is widely observed, there is limited comparative research on how different social media platforms foster this phenomenon in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on individual platforms in isolation, neglecting the interplay between diverse digital environments. This gap hinders our understanding of the mechanisms driving innovative language use and the role of platform affordances in shaping creative expressions. Educators and language researchers require comprehensive insights into these processes to effectively adapt curricula and policies to emerging digital communication trends (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

1. To compare linguistic creativity on Instagram and Twitter.

2. To identify new expressions and neologisms emerging on each platform.

3. To assess the impact of platform affordances on digital language innovation.

Research questions

1. What creative linguistic forms emerge on Instagram and Twitter?

2. How do platform features drive these innovations?

3. What are the broader implications for Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it investigates digital linguistic creativity across major Nigerian social media platforms, providing valuable insights into how innovative language use evolves online. The findings will enhance theoretical models and support practical applications in education and policy (Adeola, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study focuses on user-generated content from Instagram and Twitter in Nigeria, excluding other platforms and offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

• Linguistic Creativity: The inventive use of language to create new expressions.

• Neologism: A newly coined word or phrase.

• Digital Discourse: Communication occurring on online platforms.
